La historia del éxito de Celestron comenzó cuando el ingeniero Tom Johnson diseñó el legendario telescopio C8. Su empresa, fundada en California en 1960, es hoy una de las más célebres del sector.

La historia de Celestron se remonta a 1960, cuando Tom Johnson fundó la firma VALOR Electronics. Tom Johnson quería construir un telescopio para su hijo e inventó el sistema Schmidt-Cassegrain (SC), que hoy es la óptica de espejos de alta calidad más vendida del mundo.
Poco después cambió el nombre de la empresa a Celestron y se dedicó en exclusiva a la fabricación de sus telescopios. Durante los primeros años de su andadura fabricaba aparatos cada vez más grandes. Su producto estrella eran los telescopio Cassegrain con apertura de hasta 22".
Barack Obama mira a través de un telescopio celestron (PD)Con la introducción de ciertas modificaciones en el genial sistema óptico del diseñador alemán Bernhard Schmidt, Celestron creó el Schmidt-Cassegrain (telescopio "SC"), que terminaría por revolucionar la astronomía amateur a nivel mundial. Hasta hoy ningún otro concepto de telescopio ha logrado hacer sombra a las ventajas del sistema SC.
Sus características más destacables son su compatibilidad con prácticamente cualquier accesorio imaginable (sin importar la longitud) y, por supuesto, la perfecta protección del sistema de espejos frente al entorno y al envejecimiento. Y es que generalmente el interior de las ópticas Celestron sigue igual 30 años después de su compra.
La "idea Schmidt-Cassegrain" dio lugar a toda una familia de telescopios con sistemas ópticos para todos los bolsillos, hasta los últimos telescopios NexStar-Evolution y CGX con el sistema de alineación SkyAlign.
El SkyAlign le permite manejar su telescopio y encontrar innumerables objetos celestes aun sin conocimientos previos, sin necesidad de complicados preparativos y aunque haya contaminación lumínica o mala visibilidad.
Los nuevos telescopios CGX combinan ópticas SC sobre la innovadora montura CGX, que es la más moderna de su categoría y está especialmente indicada para la astrofotografía, sobre todo si se practica en movimiento.
Y hablando de astrofotografía: Celestron comercializa sus cámaras bajo las marcas NexImage y Skyris. Celestron tiene todo lo que el astrónomo puede soñar.
